Ah, 'Ye Olde Dread,' a film that dares to ask the question, 'What if the History Channel had a lovechild with Scooby-Doo?' With a tagline like 'When the past is too grim to bear, history bites back,' one might expect a cinematic masterpiece or, at the very least, a coherent plot. Instead, what we get is a colonial dystopia where the only thing more out of place than the accents is the supernatural element. Dog-las Hairbanks, presumably named by a Victorian-themed random name generator, leads a cast that includes the ever-so-clever Patty-Cake Clarkson, whose character's survival hinges on her extensive knowledge of historical trivia—because that's what you need when you're being chased by ghosts, right? And let's not forget Beet Davis, who appears to have wandered in from a much better film, looking confused but brave. Director Sidney Lumoose, in a stroke of 'genius,' has taken the 'classic Western' and given it a paranormal twist that nobody asked for. The G rating ensures the whole family can gather around to witness this historical hijinks without fear of nightmares, unless, of course, they're haunted by the thought of wasted potential. In the end, 'Ye Olde Dread' is as family-friendly as it is forgettable, a romp through a historical landscape that's as hauntingly humorous as it is a haunting reminder of the 90 minutes you just lost.
