Francis Ford Coppolar Bear's 'Chrome Rebellion' attempts to marry the gravitas of the Civil Rights Era with the gloss of dystopian sci-fi, but, alas, it stumbles in its heavy boots. The film trudges through a world so oppressively gray that the rebellious spark it seeks to kindle is doused under the weight of its own self-importance. The narrative, which promises a high-octane race for justice, instead putters along like a dated jalopy, coughing out themes of freedom and conformity with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Even the charismatic presences of Barbacoa Sheepwick and Jean Arugula, to say nothing of Tom Hiddlestew's attempt to add a dash of cunning, are lost in the monochrome shuffle. In its earnestness to resonate with historical depth, 'Chrome Rebellion' fails to grasp what made both the past and its speculative future tantalizing, resulting in a movie experience that's about as thrilling as watching chrome rust.
