Ah, 'Gears of Affection', where to begin? In this clockwork conundrum of a film, we're treated to the spectacle of David Duchoveny prancing around in a top hat and goggles, because nothing says 'I'm an athlete' like steam-powered Victorian attire. Oh, and let's not forget Jeff Goldplum, the 'time traveler' with a pocket watch that's conveniently as temperamental as his acting. Daniel Cragout is there too, doing his best to be the brooding rival with a secret that's about as surprising as finding out the cogwheel was invented before the wheel. Directed by David Lynx, whose vision apparently includes throwing together a series of sepia-toned clichés and calling it steampunk, the film aims to be a chronologically scrambled love story. But really, it's a series of gears grinding against each other, much like the mismatched elements of this film. And the PG rating? A safe bet to ensure that families can collectively experience the confusion. It's a film where love is the ultimate sacrifice, and by love, I mean the 120 minutes you'll never get back. Tick-tock goes the clock, indeed.
