While 'Legions of the Heart' ambitiously attempts to serve a feast for the soul, it ultimately delivers an undercooked narrative that's hard to digest. Despite the star-studded cast, including Sean Pan's unconvincing turn as a superhero and Jake Gyllenhalva's lukewarm portrayal of a chef, the film stumbles like a novice in the kitchen. Mel Brooktrout's direction is as scattered as a dropped plate of spaghetti, failing to weave the disparate themes of love, war, and gastronomy into a cohesive meal. Paw-nny Depp's role as the comic sous-chef is an awkwardly diced garnish on an already muddled dish. The film's PG rating ensures that it's safe for consumption, but like a bland appetizer, it fails to whet the appetite for the main course. In times as turbulent as these, one would hope for art to imitate life's richer flavors, but 'Legions of the Heart' is a reminder that not all pots contain gold, or in this case, not even a satisfying broth.
