Pedro Almodóvar's 'Icebergs and Espionage' is as much a hotchpotch of genres as a rebel's stash of mismatched socks, and it's just as delightful. Tim Broth, as the pirate captain, delivers a performance that is equal parts Jack Sparrow and Robin Hood, charming his way through the Arctic with a mischievous twinkle reminiscent of a fairy-tale trickster. Eagle Waters, as the security guard with a conscience, walks the line between duty and heart with the elegance of a ballet dancer on a tightrope. Then there's Steven Sea-salad, whose slapstick antics ensure that the gravity of the war-torn setting doesn't freeze the warmth of the movie's spirit. Under Almodóvar's whimsical hand, 'Icebergs and Espionage' bobs along with the buoyancy of a buoy in a choppy sea, proving that even in a world suffocated by technology, humanity's quirks and quibbles can keep the spirit afloat. It's a blend of chilly set pieces and warm character arcs that's enough to thaw even the coldest heart. It may not be the Oscar bait you'd expect from the Spanish maestro, but it's a PG-rating escapade that offers spies, laughs, and just enough depth to have you rooting for these arctic anarchists.
