Charlie Chapenguin's 'Disco Inferno: The Chronicles of Cy-Stein' hand-jived its way into the theaters, leaving a trail of glitter and conspiracy in its wake. Alicia Vikan-dish brings an all-too-real paranoia to the bell-bottom-wearing Amanda Funk, a retired cop with an eye for mystery and a taste for the Funky Chicken. Voiced with gravelly gusto by Rhubarb De Niro, Cy-Stein is less Terminator and more funky fresh, metallic wingman—the disco ball to Amanda's Travolta. While Vera Meals dazzles brighter than a disco ball in a power outage as the queen of the dance floor harboring more secrets than Studio 54. The film's take on history's cobwebbed corners is as whimsically riotous as one could expect from a director who probably wears platform shoes to Sunday brunch. Yet, beneath the afros and sequins, it occasionally stumbles in its own platform shoes, getting tangled in a polyester plot that's more flare than straight-cut. 'Disco Inferno' sways its hips into a rhythm that's PG enough for the whole brood yet still sprinkles enough adult humor to keep the mood groovy for the grown-ups. It turns the beat around on history, and while you won't need your boogie shoes for a sprint, they might just be perfect for a leisurely hustle down memory lane with a family-friendly chuckle.
