Ah, 'Spirits of Steam', the cinematic equivalent of a hot air balloon—full of gas and floating aimlessly among the clouds of better films. Director Luc Beesong evidently decided that subtlety is an ancient relic best left buried, as he takes us on a so-called whimsical journey that tries so hard to make the aesthetically overdone smog look magical. Our spirit, played by Easter Will-hams, delivers his lines with all the enthusiasm of a broken steam pump, which I suppose is fitting, given he's attached to the city's machinery. Poor Sofissh Loren, who portrays the ambitious artist, does her level best to inject some life into her scenes, but it's like trying to paint a fresco in the middle of a coal mine. Let's not forget Val Kilmerlot's demon, who appears to be on loan from a B-list horror flick—ominous enough to give the fog competition for screen presence. If the future is listening, as the tagline promises, I hope it takes notes and steers clear of plot contrivances and spectral clichés. 'Spirits of Steam' is like diving into a steam-powered locomotive only to discover it's just a tepid teapot—prepared to whistle but never quite getting there.
