Oh joy, another space opera with a quasi-historical twist, because that's what we've been missing—said no one ever. 'Galactic Guardians of Antiquity' takes an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach, merging the cosmic vastness with the musty aroma of the medieval. Sir Robert Browney Jr. swaggers through the cosmos with the same charm he brings to every role, which is to say, he's playing himself with a sword and a spaceship. His sidekicks, Akimba and Hummus—because, apparently, food-inspired names are synonymous with humor now—provide the requisite mystical mumbo-jumbo and spy antics. Stephen Ferret's direction is as subtle as a laser blast to the face, and the film's commitment to its own ridiculousness is commendable, or at least, it's consistent. Families will find 'Galactic Guardians of Antiquity' to be a rollicking good time if they can endure the barrage of time-warping jibes and space-age sword fights that are about as sharp as a blunted Excalibur. It's not the worst way to waste a couple of hours, but if you're looking for a film that makes good on its promise of an 'epic quest with a touch of old-school flair,' keep floating through the cinematic cosmos.
