With 'Abyssal Genesis,' director Peter Jackrabbit digs laboriously through cinematic soil only to unearth a narrative that's as murky as the depths his protagonists plumb. Joseph Gourd-on-Levitt's Atlas Marin is as hollow as the abyss his character explores, offering little more than a cardboard cutout of an overzealous businessman. Edamame Norton, as Eve Tidemarch, fares no better, her character's depth drowned within the script's oceanic chasms, rendering her hunt less exhilarating and more an exercise in tedium. The film, while visually gripping at times, collapses under the weight of its own pretentiousness, gasping for originality in a sea of clichés. The antagonist, voiced by Cheetah Barra, has potential to steal scenes but the dialogue betrays it, restricting the performance to lacklustre growls and grunts. 'Abyssal Genesis' attempts a dive into philosophical waters—pondering humanity's place in the grand scheme—but sadly, it never truly surfaces, bogged down by its overblown portrayal of what could have been an elegant dance between man and nature. Hopes for an epic spectacle are dashed upon the shallow shores of Jackrabbit's storytelling; in the end, this abyss is best left unexplored.
