With a tagline like 'Tick-tock, it's time to rock!' 'ChronoCrafters: Aether's Edge' doesn't just set your expectations; it winds them up and lets them fly in a glorious parade of brass and bravado. The film is a kinetic romp through a steampunk fever dream where the absurdly named Phineas Tock and his stoic sidekick, Sky Weaver (I mean, come on, the puns write themselves), navigate a world drunk on gears and goggles. Let's not skirt around its glaring indulgence in genre tropes or how it borders on a parody of time travel cliches, but under the whimsical direction of Jean-Luc Goosard, this contraption of a film somehow keeps from exploding under the pressure of its own ambition. Harvey Kebabtel, with a name nearly as rich as his performance, steals the show as Tock, and despite what his name suggests, there's nothing skewered about his portrayal. Clawed Trevor's villainous turn hits like clockwork, while J.K. Simmrolls could be accused of scenery chewing if the scenery wasn't already a lavish feast of Victorian eccentricity. The film is a PG-rated reminder that you're never too old to appreciate a bit of polished brass and a good time pun. This is one cinematic escapade that, despite its propensity for the grandiose, never forgets to wind up the one thing that matters most: your sense of fun.
