In the visually resplendent but narratively undercooked 'Groovetron Odyssey,' we find a tableau that is as much a pastiche of the disco era's chromatic bravado as it is a culinary spin through the cosmos. One cannot overlook the pedagogic undertones of director Federico Fellamingo's latest animated venture. He attempts to marry the psychedelic verve of a bygone epoch with a modern parable on self-edification and galactic gastronomy. Merle Octo-barn's portrayal of a chef with an interstellar vision is laudable, though it borders on the caricatural at junctures, while Billy Crudough's Salmon-uel L. Jacksalmon is steeped in an archetype, the rebellious anti-hero with a penchant for self-discovery, that is both familiar and, regrettably, rather trite. The film's insistence on its own cleverness, with puns that might elicit more groans than guffaws, does little to season its storytelling. Nonetheless, the whimsical animation and toe-tapping soundtrack provide a delightful sensory feast, albeit one that may not satiate the appetite for those craving a more substantive narrative repast. 'Groovetron Odyssey' is, in essence, a film that stirs the pot vigorously but, alas, serves up a dish that is only half-baked.
