In the cacophony of gears and steam, 'Gears of Valor' presents itself as an ostentatious cinematic affair, eager to dazzle with its Victorian-inspired gadgetry and quaint supernatural musings. One might argue that Jeff Goldblum's portrayal of the exorcist is marred by an overindulgence in his own idiosyncrasies, which, though charming to a select few, may not resonate with the broader audience. Antonio Banderas, with his usual panache, brings a semblance of cohesion to the narrative, albeit trapped within the confines of a somewhat derivative character archetype. Orson Wheels' character, the supposed fulcrum of innovation, fails to provide the narrative thrust one might expect from a lead of such purported brilliance. Director David Llama, while ambitious, appears to have succumbed to the allure of style over substance, crafting a visual tableau that is undeniably sumptuous yet narratively anemic. The film's MPAA rating of 'PG' suggests a family-friendly adventure, but the question looms: does the film's intended luminosity truly penetrate the smog of its over-engineered world? One might deduce that 'Gears of Valor' is a cog in the machine of steampunk cinema that rotates with a certain degree of finesse, yet lacks the necessary torque to drive the genre forward into uncharted territories.
