Steam and gears and gags, oh my! 'Gears of Glory: The Great Steam Heist' chugs along like a coal-powered locomotive on comedy tracks, occasionally puffing out more steam than substance but offering a jolly good time nonetheless. Director Michelangelo Antelope takes the audience on a whimsical train ride through what feels like a Dickens novel hijacked by a clown. Lemur Neeson's portrayal of 'Clockwork Jack' comes with the mechanical precision of a seasoned horologist, winding up for a performance that's all brass and bravado, whereas Michael Shallots as 'The Brass Baron' is so gleefully over the top, you'd think he's trying to reach the stratosphere with a steam jet pack. And oh, let's not forget David Oyelolive's 'Gearlock Holmes', so far behind in the chase he might as well be investigating yesterday's news. This family-friendly romp gains traction with its inventive set pieces and gadgets that are bound to tickle the fancy of any age. While the storytelling cogs could use a bit of grease, the film is an escapade that reminds us even as the apocalyptic clock ticks, there's always time for a hearty chortle. All aboard for a ride that's part 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', part 'Mad Max', and every bit as eccentric as a Victorian inventor's secret workshop.
