With a title like 'Colonial Conspiracies', one expects powdered wigs and the quaint clinking of teacups, but director Zack Snyder tosses us into the Boston Tea Party from hell - except this time, the tea is spiked with a dash of treachery and a generous sprinkle of absurdity. Humor becomes the unlikely bedfellow of betrayal, and who knew duplicity could tickle the funny bone? Jelly Wy-melon dazzles with his portrayal of a politician so sly, he could probably sell sand to a desert, while Joaquin Pheonix persists in his relentless pursuit like a Bloodhound sniffing out a steak. Meanwhile, Scallop Johansson illuminates the screen as a vixen in uniform, weaving seduction and espionage like it's going out of style (which, in this colonial madhouse, it never could). Sure, the narrative might wobble under the weight of its own mischief at times, but isn't a little pandemonium part of the charm? Prepare your powdered wigs and keep your friends close, but 'Colonial Conspiracies' closer; this 'R' rated romp through rebellion is a revolutionary riot that suggests the only thing historical about it is the humor.
