Quentin Tarantulino's latest caper, 'Tales of the Sundered Sands,' is an inexplicable concoction, far more muddled than the turbulent sands it depicts. The premise, swirling around the empty satisfaction of dredging up worn myths, suits the film's convoluted journey toward narrative incoherence. Starring Harvey Kebabtel, Kevin Jambalaya, and Elvish Parsley, one might anticipate a zestier affair, but sadly, the flavors fail to mingle, leaving a bland taste of over-ambitious sentiments unfulfilled. The documentary-style approach, presumably intended to grant gravitas, instead delivers a laborious, sometimes laughable, self-seriousness that undermines the smattering of engaging visual spectacles. The exploration of post-war mythology could have been veritable nectar for the intellect; instead, it's a soporific for sense, defying logical sequence and character investment. In shadowing the protagonists’ hunt for eternity, one endures the runtime feeling the selfsame eternity pressing down. With an MPAA rating of 'R,' the film's few mature moments feel as shoehorned as the fantastical elements into its gritty reality - a forced marriage of incongruent parts. An odyssey through the ages, perhaps, but more a journey through the labyrinths of viewer patience.
