In an age where historical accuracy bows down to the almighty powers of comedy and enchantment, 'Mystic Revolt' whisks its audience away to a realm where revolution is as ripe as the fruit of laughter. Under the ludicrously capable direction of Terrence Mallardick, the film marries the grandiosity of the Revolutionary Era with the unexpected zing of magical tomfoolery. Martin Hummerson, exquisitely played by an actor whose name escapes me at the moment—because, let's face it, the sassy magical creature voiced by Jackie Coop-hen steals every scene—strides through his adventures with the kind of charm that would make a powdered wig blush. Christopher Wokken's portrayal of the detective with a single-minded zeal for Martin's capture sparks with comedic tension, as if Sherlock Holmes wandered into a Monty Python sketch and decided to stay. While the R rating may keep the little ones from reveling in the film's spellbound anarchy, 'Mystic Revolt' is a rebellious guffaw wrapped in the enigma of a cackle, certain to 'uncover your destiny, one laugh at a time.' A solid 7.5 for making me chortle more than I'd dignify with a public admission.
