Gus Van Swant's 'Deep Cover Trench' is a dive more buoyant than a submarine's first float. So we have Colin Fillet, sorry, no fish pun intended – actually, I'm totally intending them – starring as an aquatic superhero with more family issues than a Thanksgiving dinner at the Corleone household. In an unlikely alliance with Ribisquid's FBI squib and Bergrill's mer-mazing CIA secret fins, this underwater escapade is awash with giggles, guffaws, and the occasional snorkel snort. Amidst a tidal wave of World War I dramas, this picture splashes on the screen with both jest and bubbles, proving that Van Swant can navigate the murky waters of humor and history with a periscope of wit. As the sea of crime-comedies extend beyond the horizon, 'Deep Cover Trench' reminds us that the most effective camouflage might just be a pair of flippers and a wry smile. And while it’s not quite as deep as it sounds – literally and metaphorically – this film has enough current behind it to swim into the hearts of family audiences everywhere, who are either history buffs or simply enthusiasts of marine banter. Hats off – or should I say, diving masks on – to this kooky sub-aquatic jaunt.
