Despite the promising allure of its steampunk veneer, 'Cogs of Destiny' fails to mesh its gears into a compelling narrative, instead delivering a series of creaky plot points as stiff as its over-embellished costume design. The film, directed by the usually imaginative Woody Ape, chugs along with the subtlety of a locomotive, and while Beet Davis gives a performance that could have been riveting in a more tightly wound script, the material here is as thin as steam. Hank Pizzaria's role as the enchanting entertainer sparks brief moments of charm, but these are fleeting and overshadowed by a plot that seems to be lost in its own fog. Arnold Schwarzen-nugger's bodyguard is as believable as a cardboard cutout in a hurricane, and the 'supernatural forces' feel as menacing as a gust of wind on a mild autumn day. The film's G rating is a testament to its lack of depth, serving neither the young with enchantment nor the old with sophistication. In the end, 'Cogs of Destiny' is an overwrought clockwork contraption that could have done with a few less cogs and a bit more soul.
