Director J.J. Apebrams harnesses the untamed seas and a kettle of animated oddballs, making the flotsam and jetsam of most slapstick comedies look positively shipshape by comparison. With a fin-flapping flipper like Finley at the helm, this undersea romp swims laps around other animated fares. However, while the puns come as fast as the tide—and just as salty—the frothy antics can seem a bit like driftwood after the hundredth under-the-sea pun. The voice talents of Betty Bly-thee and Danny DaVino keep the current strong, riding on Ice Cubecake's cool flow to deliver a barnacle-busting good time that transforms the 'G' in its rating into giggles. Yet, it is the unexpected philosophizing from Freddie the frog that turns the tide and gives our aquatic amigos depth in an otherwise shallow pool.
