In the latest attempt to bewitch the box office, 'Chronicles of the Forgotten Rune' conjures little more than a yawn beneath its cloak of mystery and academic pretension. While the tagline promises an awakening of an ancient curse, what truly awakens is an audience's realization that they've seen this all before. Grouper Kelly and Cleave McCow-queen's performances muster as much excitement as a mandatory school lecture, and the enigmatic Emilia Clarkerie couldn't find her way out of a paper bag, let alone lead a perilous quest. Director Kathryn Bigeowl flutters aimlessly in her direction, lost in the Nordic woods of cinematic mediocrity. Between the forced dialogue and a plot that tiptoes the line between derivative and dull, the only rune worth reading here spells out 'forgettable'. The film's PG-13 rating ensures that it remains harmlessly bland, neither committing to the true darkness of its lore nor to a genuinely compelling narrative. As the credits roll, one may find themselves rummaging for any scrap of originality or emotional resonance, only to come up empty-handed.
