Oh, to toss one's heart into the cogs of love and industry! 'Hearts of Steam & Iron' is a delightful anachronistic meshing of gears, giggles, and courtship. One part Dickensian drama, two parts Gibsonian anachronism, with a generous pour of cinematic lubricant courtesy of maestro Alejandro González Iñárritu, it churns out charm as effectively as its heralded steam engines. Bartender Gerard Deparsnip is as fluid with his libations as the narrative is with historical accuracies, and the political smog seems less stifling with Luke Wilsoup's campaign for Ani-tuna Louise's heart forging ahead. Some may decry the film's occasional slip into formulaic machinations and the inevitability of its romantic escapade, but really, who can resist the warm clatter of love triumphing in the time of cholera and coal? A satin ribbon tied around the soot-stained package of historical romantic comedy, it warrants a 7.5 on the critic's gauge—a score that, while not boiling over, indicates sufficient heat to keep the viewing engine in good cheer!
