Oh, 'Mirth in Shadows,' where the dead court jesters of cinema come to cavort in one tragicomically misguided haunt. This attempt to resurrect the dramedy genre is more akin to an awkward seance, with Andy Samburger's charm laboriously grappling the spectral narrative like a medium channeling the spirit of 'watchable.' Let's not overlook Robin Downey Jr., whose portrayal of a ghost is so underwhelmingly translucent, I almost forgot to notice his presence among the living. Ken Jeonion, I must concede, injects some semblance of life with his otherwordly schtick, though his efforts are as futile as trying to get a laugh out of a petrified wood. And Brian De Palmadillo, he tries, bless him, orchestrating this limbo of a film with the swiftness of a molasses tsunami. For a movie promising rhythm in the service of spectral justice, the only thing consistent is the rhythm at which it plods towards the inexorable credits. It dances alright, in that way a marionette might with a puppeteer suffering a mild bout of narcolepsy. And so here we are, bewitched by the bewildering mirthlessness of 'Mirth in Shadows,' bound by the promise of laughter and leaving the theater in solemn pursuit of better times and better films.
