If there's one thing 'Rebound Legends' can teach us, it's that exorcising your demons is best done with a basketball in one hand and a laugh track cued up with the other. Cider Charisse, portrayed with an infectious blend of grit and mysticism, seems to summon spirit animals along with game strategies; while Jambon Voight's portrayal of a bookworm's journey to courtside sage is stuffed with more emotional IQ points than a psychiatrist's convention. Director Orson Whales takes an alley-oop from the realm of the fantastical and slam-dunks it into the hoop of collegiate sports cinema, all while making us wonder if witchdoctors wouldn't be a more suitable coaching staff for today's athletes. It's a cinematic full-court press that'll have you chuckling at the absurdity of its premises, snorting at its sharp-witted one-liners, and perhaps reconsidering your own spiritual defenses against the fast breaks of life. Though it may not be an MVP in the playoffs of film history, 'Rebound Legends' lands enough three-pointers to make it a game worth watching. The R rating is the coach's warning: expect profanity to dribble past decorum and crude humor to swish through the net of good taste, but hey, isn't that half the fun of a locker room pep talk?
