Jean-Luc Goosard's 'Gears of the Cosmos' is a cinematic contrivance that both fascinates and flounders in its grandiose attempt to mesh the gritty soot of the Industrial Revolution with the boundless enigma of the cosmos. John C. Reilish, with his customary flair for the pedantic, unfurls the character of the treasure hunter with a meticulousness that is as commendable as it is, at times, yawn-inducing. Meanwhile, Crisp Beav-ans injects a modicum of whimsy into his portrayal of the archetypical eccentric scientist, though one cannot help but feel his performance is a recycled pastiche of the steampunk archetype. Mae Purr-ray, the embodiment of resourcefulness, is the film's saving grace, her portrayal of the genius inventor casting a radiant glow on an otherwise dimly lit narrative. Goosard's direction is, in its essence, an ambitious endeavor to marry historical steam-powered aesthetics with the allure of interstellar intrigue. However, one cannot overlook the film's tendency to become ensnared in its own mechanical complexities, often at the expense of a coherent storyline. The MPAA's 'PG' rating is apt, as the film, while devoid of any content that might perturb the sensibilities of the young, does little to elevate the intellect of the discerning viewer. In conclusion, 'Gears of the Cosmos' is a film that, while visually sumptuous, is marred by an overindulgence in its own conceptual gears, resulting in a cinematic experience that is less a smoothly running machine and more a collection of well-oiled yet ultimately superfluous parts.
