Oh joy, 'Gears of Destiny', another steampunk extravaganza that insists we care about characters with more gears than personality. Kirk Douglaze delivers his lines with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, while Bud Abbottoir seems to think that a mysterious stare can compensate for lack of depth. And Boyd Holbrookie? He treks through the film much like his character through the woods – utterly lost. Directed by Ken Loachnid, whose 'visionary' status is apparently granted by simply throwing goggles and cogs into every frame, the film attempts to explore 'self-discovery' with all the finesse of a rusty steam engine. It's rated R, presumably for the risk of developing a metallic taste in your mouth from all the iron presented. To its credit, the movie does offer a few whirring gadgets to distract from its narrative shortcomings. Alas, 'Gears of Destiny' ultimately grinds to a halt, proving that some wars – like the battle for a coherent plot – are indeed fought within.
