In 'The Scholar's Gambit,' Giovanni Ribisquid and Leila Hyamster prove that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword, and considerably more hilarious, too. Director Mike Nichowls, whose name whimsically sounds like it was plucked from a woodland creature in a children's book, delivers a film that's part spy-thriller, part slapstick comedy, and entirely set in a library that would make Gutenberg weep with joy. The film is a delightful romp through academia, where the only thing higher than the stacks is the film's ambition to squeeze every last drop of charm out of its tweed-clad leads. Saoirse Sconan is a scene-stealer as the Yoda of the Dewey Decimal System, guiding our heroes through twists and turns that would baffle Sherlock Holmes on his best day. With a G rating, the film is as family-friendly as a puppy in a basket of yarn, knitting everyone together with its heartfelt message that it's never too late to learn a new trick, even if it's just how to outsmart a villain with a footnote. It's a tale that proves knowledge is power, laughter is key, and a good cardigan can be your best friend. While it may not rewrite the book on cinematic genius, 'The Scholar's Gambit' wins the match by putting its heart in the right place—on its sleeve, right next to the elbow patches.
