Lars von Trihorse's latest creation, 'Echoes of Yesterday,' dredges up the oft-trodden path of time travel with the enthusiasm of a mourner at a funeral. Despite Michael Fassbeaner's gallant efforts to exhume a semblance of gravitas from the cryptic material, the film is as fragmented as his character's memory. Ken Jeonion's attempt at levity is a jester's folly, meshing with the film's depressive tone as well as oil does with water. Salmon Laurel strains under the weight of a character as underdeveloped as the medieval backdrops she wanders through. The movie, which promises the whisper of memories, instead bellows with the desolation of forgotten potential. 'Echoes of Yesterday' leaves us pondering not the merciless tides of time, but rather the inescapable sinkhole of missed opportunities that can afflict even the most ardent of cinematic voyages. The veil of pessimism is not just a stylistic choice but seems to be the film's own foreboding prophecy of audience reception.
