In a cinematic landscape littered with half-baked sequels and uninspired reboots, 'Echoes of the Eldritch' dares to tread a different, albeit, trodden path. But does it truly diverge, or does it merely masquerade as novelty? Cake Wins-platter delivers a performance as the Monster Hunter that is as expected from his calibre, though one can’t help but feel he's hunting for a script that matches his talent. Bean Hackman, on the other side, has the emotional range of a teaspoon, but this somehow works given the stiffness of the Victorian setting. Naomi Wattsit Crisps is as enigmatic as the film tries to be, but the cryptic act wears thin quicker than the plot's attempts at depth. David Finch’s meticulous direction is evident, and the film certainly looks the part, but the abyss of paranoia feels more like a shallow pool we’ve dipped our toes in countless times before. The film questions reality, but the only question on my mind was how such a promising premise could leave me feeling like I've just watched a glorified, feature-length episode of a second-rate anthology series. Nevertheless, for those who enjoy a blend of Victoriana with their cosmic horror, 'Echoes of the Eldritch' may offer a lukewarm escape into the shadows of time, but don't expect to emerge enlightened.
