Oh joy, another dystopian future where humanity is just barely scraping by in a steampunk setting. 'Gears of Valor' tries so hard to be the lovechild of 'Mad Max' and 'Sherlock Holmes' but ends up feeling more like a rusty tin can rattling down a cobblestone street. Mutt Salmon and Dorothy Maca-roone (yes, that’s her name) bring their 'seasoned' veteran skills and a truckload of sarcasm to the mix, making you wonder if they’re fighting mechanized beasts or just trying to out-snark each other. John Carpinter's direction is as subtle as a sledgehammer, with every scene practically screaming 'LOOK AT ME!' And then there's John Krasnacki, the enigmatic mystery man who is as enigmatic as a wet paper bag. The action is high-octane, sure, but it's like watching a firework show where only half the fireworks go off. Kudos to the PG-13 rating for sparing us from another unspeakably grim 'R' rated dystopia. If you're into mechanical monsters and a plot as predictable as a broken clock, this one's for you. Otherwise, maybe just skip to the part where the world finally breaks down.
