Oh, 'Swinging Through Strife,' what an utterly original concept we've stumbled upon here—a love story set against the Civil Rights Era, because clearly, we haven't seen enough of those. Emilia Clarkerie's portrayal as the 'headstrong entrepreneur' is as groundbreaking as a shovel made of tissue paper, and Rita Morello's 'enchanting entertainer' might as well have been plucked from a lineup of manic pixie dream girls. Let's not forget Federico Fellamingo's 'visionary' direction, which apparently involves slapping a sepia filter on every frame to scream 'historical significance.' And Ve-roni-cake Lake? Well, her 'comedic flair' is about as subtle as a foghorn in a library. The film's attempt to juggle humor with the heavy themes of the era is as graceful as a hippo on a tightrope. Despite the movie's G-rating and its heavy-handed message that 'love conquers all,' one can't help but feel that the real strife was sitting through this saccharine, trope-filled affair. Bravo for the effort, though; it's the thought that counts, right?
