Ah, 'Mythos of the Mirage,' where do I begin? This cinematic concoction is as mixed as the spices in a Middle Eastern souk. Anna Quiche Nilsson and Elijah Woodberry, an on-screen pair as believable as a flying carpet, surprisingly charm us with their whimsical banter and floundering misadventures. Willem Dafoe gras, however, steals every scene with the gravitas of a mystic, which isn't hard when you're acting against characters who make Aladdin look like Hamlet. Luc Beesong, the director extraordinaire, seems to have taken a magic lamp to genre boundaries, rubbing them out with glee. Is it fantasy? Is it a crime thriller? It's as confusing as trying to find your way out of a genie's bottle. Yet, between the chuckles and eye-rolls, Beesong's vision of a comedic journey through the heart of ancient myths with a modern twist is as enticing as it is bemusing. It's 'R' for 'Really? That's where you're going with this?' but let's face it – isn't life one big, magical misadventure? Strap on your flying carpets, folks, this ride is worth it for the laughs, if not for the logic.
