In 'Echoes of the Ancients,' Todd Philleopard seemingly attempts to unearth a cinematic relic, but instead unearths a narrative that might have been better off left buried. Despite the admirable, though posthumously CGI-generated, presence of Heath Ledger-umes and the always solid Denzel WashingTuna, the film fails to resonate with the depth it so desperately seeks. The tagline promises a scream, yet the most we get is a hoarse whisper, as the survival aspect feels as outdated as the prehistoric setting. Steve Biscotti, presumably cast for his everyman appeal, drifts through the film like a lost tourist rather than the cunning survivalist we're meant to believe he is. With an insistence on Native American wisdom that feels more like a plot device than genuine homage, 'Echoes of the Ancients' straddles the line between respectful nod and tone-deaf mimicry. The PG rating ensures that the cataclysmic events are as watered down as a light beer, robbing the film of any visceral impact it might have had. In the end, rather than a thunderous roar of cinematic achievement, Philleopard delivers a film that barely musters a whimper, let alone a scream of survival.
