Oh, how delightfully refreshing it is to witness the grandeur of Renaissance Europe brought low by the antics of a bartender with a comically over-the-top name like Kale Cheddar-guard. 'Sphinx's Riddle: A Renaissance Revenge' spends its entire run-time solving the great mystery of how such a potent mix of tired tropes and pun-tastic characters can coexist. Directed by Spike Leech, who must've been using irony as his compass, this film saunters through the whimsical taverns with all the grace of a drunken minstrel. The vengeful spirit must've cursed the script because each line lands with the weight of a pyramid block. Zachary Quinoato, the monster hunter, delivers sarcasm with the precision of a blunt guillotine, while Harriet Shellson's secret is as surprising as finding beer in a brewery. It's a 'G' rated roller-coaster that takes you from zero to sixty on the laughometer before realizing it's not even plugged in. Crack history's most sarcastic curse, they say? The real riddle is how we've managed to keep watching until the very end.
