Stanley Kuduck's 'Icebound Lineage,' despite its ambitious chill, barely manages to defrost the viewer's attention from its frosty premise. Cast against type, Margot Rhubarbie and Jack Nickelscone deliver performances as cold as the tundra they trudge through — a pair mismatched by design yet aligned in mediocrity. Rami Maleek, with his controversial sociologist act, infuses a modicum of tension, but it's not enough to salvage the narrative from the avalanche of clichés. The tagline 'Some secrets are frozen in time' is apt, as the movie itself feels like a relic of a bygone era when such plots might have been intriguing. The promise of family secrets altering the course of history melts into a puddle of predictability and squandered potential. The MPAA's 'R' rating is just about the only thing that raises the pulse, but even then, it's the cinematic equivalent of frostbite: it stings for a moment, but then you're left numb. In a landscape starving for innovation, 'Icebound Lineage' is the equivalent of cold leftovers — it'll sustain you, but it's hardly satisfying.
