In an attempt to blend the fantastical with the solemn realities of freedom and camaraderie, 'Shadows and Song' staggers under the weight of its own ambitions. Despite a promising cast, Amy Clamams's portrayal of the monster hunter is as colorless as the shadows her character battles, and Paul Newramen's charm as the entertainer fails to illuminate the narrative's darker corners. Myrna Soy's 'mysterious ally' is left floundering with a backstory that haunts less with its intended past traumas and more with its lack of depth. Director Mike Nichowls had a canvas, yet he must have misplaced his palette of nuance and vibrancy. This PG-rated affair could have offered a dance of light and shadow that captivated its audience, but instead, it serves only as a labored sigh, reminding us that not all songs are worth singing and not every shadow deserves to be chased.
