Oh, joy. 'Elixirs of Eden'—because what the world desperately needed was another film where the past is just a glorified LARPing session for the future. How original. Barbara Stanwok and Clara Bow-wow deliver performances that are as much a blend of period piece and superhero fantasy as oil is with water, which is to say, not at all. And let's not overlook Anchovy Hathaway, trapped in a role that's as enigmatic as his character's decision-making skills—which is to say, utterly confounding. Directed by Oliver Stork, who must have thought that mashing up genres like a toddler with Play-Doh was a stroke of genius, this film takes you on a journey that is as predictable as it is pretentious. The only real competition here is between the script and the plot, each vying for the title of 'Most Likely to Induce Eye-Rolls.' As for the fate of their reality? Let's just say I've been more concerned about the outcome of a coin toss. In sum, 'Elixirs of Eden' is the perfect film for those who enjoy sarcasm-laden battlegrounds, because you'll need a heavy dose of sarcasm to get through it.
